GreenMove Project Advances Sustainable Rural Mobility with Landmark Meeting in Malta!

European-funded initiative unites 16 nations to drive innovation in green transportation for rural and island communities.

Siggiewi, Malta – June 14, 2025 – The GreenMove Project, a pioneering initiative funded by the European Commission under the CERV-2024-Network of Towns program, organized and initiated by the Municipality of North Corfu, Greece, celebrated a major milestone with its second transnational meeting in Siggiewi, Malta, from June 10–13, 2025. Bringing together representatives from 16 countries, the event marked a significant step forward in fostering sustainable, smart, and inclusive mobility solutions for rural and island regions across Europe.

A Vision for Greener and more Sustainable Island and Rural Mobility

Transportation in rural and island areas faces unique challenges—limited infrastructure, dependency on fossil fuels, and environmental vulnerabilities. The GreenMove Project tackles these issues head-on by promoting low-emission policies, participatory governance, and cutting-edge green technologies. By facilitating cross-border collaboration, the initiative aims to reduce congestion, lower pollution, and improve quality of life for both residents and visitors.

Highlights from the Malta Meeting

Hosted by the Siggiewi Local Council, the three-day event featured:

✔ Expert-led discussions on Innovative Technologies for Sustainable Mobility and Energy Efficiency—showcasing actionable strategies for rural and island communities.

✔ Interactive workshops with Friends of the Earth Malta (FoE Malta), a leading environmental NGO, to exchange best practices in green mobility.

✔ A visit to Dar tal-Providenza, a renowned care home for individuals with disabilities, highlighting the intersection of social inclusion and sustainable development.

✔ Strengthened partnerships among 17 organizations, paving the way for long-term cooperation beyond the project’s 18-month timeline.

What’s Next? Croatia & Bosnia Herzegovina Await

Following this successful gathering, the third GreenMove meeting will take place in October 2025, hosted by Podstrana Municipality (Croatia) with a special focus on cross-border collaboration, including a full-day session in Livno, Bosnia Herzegovina. This next phase will further refine policy recommendations, pilot projects, and community-driven solutions to accelerate Europe’s rural green transition.
